Attached to the upper molars by cemented bands, the Rapid Palatal Expander (RPE) is an orthodontic device used to create a wider palate. It is typically used when the upper jaw width is narrower than the lower jaw width resulting in a crossbite. The bones that make up the palate meet and connect in the midline into what is called a suture, or growth site. During your younder years this suture is flexible and is very receptive to forces applied to it by the palatal expander.
The RPE is activated by turning a screw in the center with a special key that will be provided from the front of the mouth towards the back of the mouth. Gradual outward pressure is placed on the left and right halves of the jaw. Ultimately resulting in a wider palate. The growth site becomes tighter and tighter as we age into our mid-teens, eventually fusing toghether. Consequesntly, RPEs are often utilized at a younger age.
When your expander is activated you will feel some minor pressure for just a few seconds. Dr. Klomparens will direct you as to how many times the key is turned each day, usually one or two times. The RPE is generally left in place for a period of 3 to 4 months folowing the last activation, which ensures that new bone has completely filled in the growth site.
